The money for the Shamrocks for the MDA needs to be turned in.

There will be a prom committee meeting in Mrs. Rudy's room after school today.

This week is National Beta Club week. All Beta Club members should participate each day.

Yearbook on sale for $55.00 deposit $30.00.

National Beta Club is this week. Tomorrow will be college attire day. Wednesday dress in your most creative outfit. The outfit could be a career choice, TV character, Book Character hobby choice etc. Thursday t-shirt signing and Beta Breakfast. Only Beta can attend. Friday Beta members are asked to wear their Beta Club t-shirt and pin.

Cheerleading tryouts (JV and Varsity) will be held March 21-24. Students interested in cheering next school year need to pick up applications from Mrs. Duncan or Ms. Nickels and have the forms returned by March 14th.

There will be an Envirothon team meeting on Tuesday from 3 until 4:30 in Mr. Cole's room.

Need a good book? Come by the media center and see our new books on display. They are nominated for North Carolina Young Adult Book of the Year 2011. Vote on your favorite.

Attention juniors: Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is again sponsoring the Washington Youth Tour for high school juniors in each of the four primary service districts. The trip is scheduled for June 11-17, 2011. You may apply online at www.blueridgeemc.com under “In the Community” tab. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2011 and interviews will be held in late March.

Attention sophomores: Alleghany High School has been chosen by the SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership In Tomorrow’s Endeavors) Program at NC State University to give sophomores the opportunity to attend this educational retreat May 14 – May 18, 2011. Applications are available in guidance or you can fill out the application online at clubs.ncsu.edu/satellite, print it and mail to their office. Cost to attend is $25, plus transportation to and from the program and any extra spending money.

Attention Students 15-18- ASU is offering a summer residential camp experience in Forensic Anthropology at ASU for 1 week. Information can be found at www.appstate.edu/-Robbinsgm/. Only 24 students will be accepted into each week. Camp fee is $600 and students must register by May 1, 2011. After May 1, a $50 processing fee applies. Weeks are July 17 – July 22 and July 24 – July 29. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

Attention seniors:

The SECU Foundation “People Helping People” Scholarship Program will award a graduating senior at each traditional public high school and two charter high schools in North Carolina a four-year college scholarship. All graduating seniors meeting the stated criteria will be eligible for consideration. This is a $10,000 (payable @ $1,250 per semester) to attend one of the 16 constituent campuses of the UNC System. Every graduating senior with a GPA of 2.5 will be considered for the scholarship. There is no formal application process. If you have been accepted to one of the 16 universities and meet the GPA criteria, see Mrs. Miller in guidance to be added to the list of candidates for review.

The SECU Foundation “People Helping People” Scholarship Program is also offering a $5,000 Community College Scholarship. See the financial aid office at the Community College you have been accepted to for more information.

The Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established October 2001 by the family of the late Janice Marie Scott. She was among the 125 individuals who perished in the Pentagon during the attacks by terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001. Six $2500 scholarships will be awarded on a one-time basis. Deadline for submission of applications is March 31, 2011. See Mrs. Miller in guidance for more information.

You may qualify for the Bob R. McGuire Memorial Scholarship or the North Carolina Child Support Council Scholarship. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

The North Carolina Farm Bureau R. Flake Shaw Scholarship Program offers two opportunities. The university/college scholarship is valued at $3000 per year for four years. The community college scholarship is valued at $1000 per year for two years. Applications are available in guidance, at the local Farm Bureau office and online at www.ncfb.org/Programs/rfShaw/rfShaw.cfm. Deadline is March 15, 2011 at the local Farm Bureau office. See Mrs. Miller with any questions.

The N.C. Association of Rescue and EMS administrates the Whitlow-Osborne Scholarship for the Carson and Maggie Whitlow and William F. Osborne families and will each year award (1) $2000 scholarship to a High School Senior or Member of an Emergency Services organization in Alleghany County (among others). Recipient must enter into an Emergency Services Curriculum for a course of study at a community college, technical institute, or an accredited trade school in the fall that same year. Awards will be paid to the student in installments of $500 per semester. This scholarship may be awarded for a total of (2) years. Deadline for submission of application is March 31, 2011. The North Carolina Bar Association is continuing its program of awarding scholarships to children of North Carolina law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. The North Carolina Society of Accountants Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1970 to provide scholarships for deserving students who indicate a desire to enter the profession of Accounting. The scholarship awards for 2011-2012 school year will be $500 each. Deadline for submission of application is April 15, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

The State Employees Association of North Carolina’s (SEANC) scholarship is available online at www.seanc.org and must be returned, completed, to the Scholarship Chairman of the district of which the parent is a member. All applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2011. The applicant and/or parent or guardian must be a member of SEANC. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

Any senior interested in a career as a CAT Diesel Technician is invited to apply to the Caterpillar Dealer Academy at Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, SC. This is a two-year associates degree program. See Mrs. Miller for more information.


North Carolina State University is holding an engineering Open House on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. All high school students and their families are invited to come and learn more about their Engineering and Computer Science programs. Summer opportunity available for three weeks this summer for students interested in art. The Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Young Artists at Sweet Briar College is a co-ed summer arts program for high school students interested in theatre, visual arts, and creative writing. All participants will receive an iPad, which they will keep after the program. They will also receive two hours of college credit for successfully completing the program. Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is again sponsoring the Washington Youth Tour. This opportunity is open to high school juniors whose parents are active members in good standing where their local address is their primary residence. One winner will be selected from each of the counties listed: Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, and Alleghany. This is an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the week of June 11-17, 2011.
