Attention seniors:

FRS Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. – Two high school juniors will be sponsored annually for this program that is held June 4 – 8, 2011. Eligibility requirements include: Be a high school junior in Skyline’s five-county service area, have at least a 3.25 grade-point average, exhibit demonstrated leadership in campus organizations, exhibit demonstrated leadership through volunteer activities, submit an essay of 500 words on one of three selected topics (listed on application), write a brief letter stating why you would like to attend and your future plans beyond high school, and provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school official. Applications are available in guidance. Deadline for submission of application is April 4, 2011 to Mrs. Miller.

N.C. Cooperative Leadership Conference, White Lake, NC – This is a five-day program that focuses on leadership, how cooperatives operate and traditional camp activities that is held June 20-24, 2011. Up to 10 rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors will be sponsored. Eligibility requirements include: Be single and a rising junior or senior (must be 15 years old at time of camp) at a public high school in Skyline’s service area, be able to attend the entire leadership conference, be willing to utilize training following participation in the leadership conference, have leadership potential, and previous conference attendees may not reapply for this program in any subsequent year. Applications are available in guidance. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2011 to Mrs. Miller.

The Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established October 2001 by the family of the late Janice Marie Scott. She was among the 125 individuals who perished in the Pentagon during the attacks by terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001. Six $2500 scholarships will be awarded on a one-time basis. Deadline for submission of applications is March 31, 2011. See Mrs. Miller in guidance for more information.

You may qualify for the Bob R. McGuire Memorial Scholarship or the North Carolina Child Support Council Scholarship. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

The N.C. Association of Rescue and EMS administrates the Whitlow-Osborne Scholarship for the Carson and Maggie Whitlow and William F. Osborne families and will each year award (1) $2000 scholarship to a High School Senior or Member of an Emergency Services organization in Alleghany County (among others). Recipient must enter into an Emergency Services Curriculum for a course of study at a community college, technical institute, or an accredited trade school in the fall that same year. Awards will be paid to the student in installments of $500 per semester. This scholarship may be awarded for a total of (2) years. Deadline for submission of application is March 31, 2011. The North Carolina Bar Association is continuing its program of awarding scholarships to children of North Carolina law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. The State Employees Association of North Carolina’s (SEANC) scholarship is available online at www.seanc.org and must be returned, completed, to the Scholarship Chairman of the district of which the parent is a member. They are offering students a chance to win $10,000 towards their education plus a $1000 award for their school. Entering the contest is easy. Students must submit a unique photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front of a greeting card. The student with the best design will win a $10,000 scholarship and have his/her design made into an actual card to be sold in their line. Entries accepted March 17, 2011 – January 14, 2012. FRS Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. – Two high school juniors will be sponsored annually for this program that is held June 4 – 8, 2011. Eligibility requirements include: Be a high school junior in Skyline’s five-county service area, have at least a 3.25 grade-point average, exhibit demonstrated leadership in campus organizations, exhibit demonstrated leadership through volunteer activities, submit an essay of 500 words on one of three selected topics (listed on application), write a brief letter stating why you would like to attend and your future plans beyond high school, and provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school official. Applications are available in guidance. Deadline for submission of application is April 4, 2011 to Mrs. Miller.

N.C. Cooperative Leadership Conference, White Lake, NC – This is a five-day program that focuses on leadership, how cooperatives operate and traditional camp activities that is held June 20-24, 2011. Up to 10 rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors will be sponsored. Eligibility requirements include: Be single and a rising junior or senior (must be 15 years old at time of camp) at a public high school in Skyline’s service area, be able to attend the entire leadership conference, be willing to utilize training following participation in the leadership conference, have leadership potential, and previous conference attendees may not reapply for this program in any subsequent year. Attention sophomores: Alleghany High School has been chosen by the SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership In Tomorrow’s Endeavors) Program at NC State University to give sophomores the opportunity to attend this educational retreat May 14 – May 18, 2011. Applications are available in guidance or you can fill out the application online at clubs.ncsu.edu/satellite, print it and mail to their office. Cost to attend is $25, plus transportation to and from the program and any extra spending money.

Attention Students 15-18- ASU is offering a summer residential camp experience in Forensic Anthropology at ASU for 1 week. Information can be found at www.appstate.edu/-Robbinsgm/. The SECU Foundation “People Helping People” Scholarship Program will award a graduating senior at each traditional public high school and two charter high schools in North Carolina a four-year college scholarship. All graduating seniors meeting the stated criteria will be eligible for consideration. This is a $10,000 (payable @ $1,250 per semester) to attend one of the 16 constituent campuses of the UNC System. Every graduating senior with a GPA of 2.5 will be considered for the scholarship. There is no formal application process. If you have been accepted to one of the 16 universities and meet the GPA criteria, see Mrs. Miller in guidance to be added to the list of candidates for review.

Attention sophomores: Alleghany High School has been chosen by the SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership In Tomorrow’s Endeavors) Program at NC State University to give sophomores the opportunity to attend this educational retreat May 14 – May 18, 2011. Applications are available in guidance or you can fill out the application online at clubs.ncsu.edu/satellite, print it and mail to their office. Cost to attend is $25, plus transportation to and from the program and any extra spending money.

Attention Students 15-18- ASU is offering a summer residential camp experience in Forensic Anthropology at ASU for 1 week. Information can be found at www.appstate.edu/-Robbinsgm/. Only 24 students will be accepted into each week. Camp fee is $600 and students must register by May 1, 2011. After May 1, a $50 processing fee applies. The SECU Foundation “People Helping People” Scholarship Program will award a graduating senior at each traditional public high school and two charter high schools in North Carolina a four-year college scholarship. All graduating seniors meeting the stated criteria will be eligible for consideration. This is a $10,000 (payable @ $1,250 per semester) to attend one of the 16 constituent campuses of the UNC System. Every graduating senior with a GPA of 2.5 will be considered for the scholarship. There is no formal application process. If you have been accepted to one of the 16 universities and meet the GPA criteria, see Mrs. Miller in guidance to be added to the list of candidates for review.
