Any students interested in competing in an Electric/Solar vehicle challenge to please meet in Mr. Tutterow's room briefly after school Thursday.

JV Cheerleaders turn in your uniforms and Pomp Pomps to Ms. Nickles by next Wednesday March 2.

This is the last week to pay FFA dues. If you don't pay by Friday you will not be able to participate in FFA activities the rest of the year.

SOPHOMORES: Application and nominations for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) are now available. If interested come by guidance. Deadline for having yourself nominated is today.

Unpaid students fees need to be turned in to the office by the end of the month.

Cheerleading tryouts (JV and Varsity) will be held March 21-24. Students interested in cheering next school year need to pick up applications from Mrs. Duncan or Ms. Nickels and have the forms returned by March 16th.

There will be an Envirothon team meeting on Tuesday from 3 until 4:30 in Mr. Cole's room.
The Blood Drive will be Monday, March 7. Sign ups start this week during both lunches. Those 17 and older may be eligible to donate. If you're 16, you must have parental consent. See Mrs. Tucker for questions.

Attention juniors: Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is again sponsoring the Washington Youth Tour for high school juniors in each of the four primary service districts. The trip is scheduled for June 11-17, 2011. You may apply online at www.blueridgeemc.com under “In the Community” tab. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2011 and interviews will be held in late March.

Attention sophomores: Alleghany High School has been chosen by the SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership In Tomorrow’s Endeavors) Program at NC State University to give sophomores the opportunity to attend this educational retreat May 14 – May 18, 2011. Applications are available in guidance or you can fill out the application online at clubs.ncsu.edu/satellite, print it and mail to their office. Cost to attend is $25, plus transportation to and from the program and any extra spending money.

Attention Students 15-18- ASU is offering a summer residential camp experience in Forensic Anthropology at ASU for 1 week. Information can be found at www.appstate.edu/-Robbinsgm/. Only 24 students will be accepted into each week. Camp fee is $600 and students must register by May 1, 2011. After May 1, a $50 processing fee applies. Weeks are July 17 – July 22 and July 24 – July 29. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

Attention seniors:

The SECU Foundation “People Helping People” Scholarship Program will award a graduating senior at each traditional public high school and two charter high schools in North Carolina a four-year college scholarship. All graduating seniors meeting the stated criteria will be eligible for consideration. This is a $10,000 (payable @ $1,250 per semester) to attend one of the 16 constituent campuses of the UNC System. Every graduating senior with a GPA of 2.5 will be considered for the scholarship. There is no formal application process. If you have been accepted to one of the 16 universities and meet the GPA criteria, see Mrs. Miller in guidance to be added to the list of candidates for review.

The SECU Foundation “People Helping People” Scholarship Program is also offering a $5,000 Community College Scholarship. See the financial aid office at the Community College you have been accepted to for more information.

The Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established October 2001 by the family of the late Janice Marie Scott. She was among the 125 individuals who perished in the Pentagon during the attacks by terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001. Six $2500 scholarships will be awarded on a one-time basis. Deadline for submission of applications is March 31, 2011. See Mrs. Miller in guidance for more information.

You may qualify for the Bob R. McGuire Memorial Scholarship or the North Carolina Child Support Council Scholarship. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

The North Carolina Farm Bureau R. Flake Shaw Scholarship Program offers two opportunities. The university/college scholarship is valued at $3000 per year for four years. The community college scholarship is valued at $1000 per year for two years. Applications are available in guidance, at the local Farm Bureau office and online at www.ncfb.org/Programs/rfShaw/rfShaw.cfm. Deadline is March 15, 2011 at the local Farm Bureau office. See Mrs. Miller with any questions.

Applications for the Delta Kappa Gamma Recruitment Grant in the amount of $500.00 are now available in the guidance office. Applicants must be female and either currently enrolled in or planning to enroll in a college or university to pursue a degree in education. The scholarship is sponsored by the Ashe/Alleghany Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational society. Deadline is March 1, 2011.

UNCG Guarantee is a program that not only offers an outstanding financial aid package for those who qualify; it is also a support program that provides a variety of opportunities and services to enhance scholars’ academic achievement, leadership skills, and personal success. The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program will award up to 215 grants, each valued at $12,000 ($3000 per year for up to four years) for the 2011-12 academic year. These scholarships are made possible through a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The scholarship application is available at CFNC.org/goldenleaf. The application deadline is March 1, 2011. The FAFSA must be completed by March 1, 2011 also.

The N.C. Association of Rescue and EMS administrates the Whitlow-Osborne Scholarship for the Carson and Maggie Whitlow and William F. Osborne families and will each year award (1) $2000 scholarship to a High School Senior or Member of an Emergency Services organization in Alleghany County (among others). Recipient must enter into an Emergency Services Curriculum for a course of study at a community college, technical institute, or an accredited trade school in the fall that same year. Awards will be paid to the student in installments of $500 per semester. This scholarship may be awarded for a total of (2) years. Deadline for submission of application is March 31, 2011. The North Carolina Bar Association is continuing its program of awarding scholarships to children of North Carolina law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. The North Carolina Society of Accountants Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1970 to provide scholarships for deserving students who indicate a desire to enter the profession of Accounting. The scholarship awards for 2011-2012 school year will be $500 each. Deadline for submission of application is April 15, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for more information.



The State Employees Association of North Carolina’s (SEANC) scholarship is available online at www.seanc.org and must be returned, completed, to the Scholarship Chairman of the district of which the parent is a member. All applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2011. The applicant and/or parent or guardian must be a member of SEANC. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

Any senior interested in a career as a CAT Diesel Technician is invited to apply to the Caterpillar Dealer Academy at Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, SC. This is a two-year associates degree program. See Mrs. Miller for more information.


North Carolina State University is holding an engineering Open House on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. All high school students and their families are invited to come and learn more about their Engineering and Computer Science programs. Summer opportunity available for three weeks this summer for students interested in art. The Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Young Artists at Sweet Briar College is a co-ed summer arts program for high school students interested in theatre, visual arts, and creative writing. All participants will receive an iPad, which they will keep after the program. They will also receive two hours of college credit for successfully completing the program. Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is again sponsoring the Washington Youth Tour. This opportunity is open to high school juniors whose parents are active members in good standing where their local address is their primary residence. One winner will be selected from each of the counties listed: Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, and Alleghany. This is an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the week of June 11-17, 2011. Appalachian State University is pleased to announce their SAT Preparation Program at their campus on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, April 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, and 16, 2011. Register online at www.camps.appstate.edu.

High school juniors interested in studying business as a college major are invited to participate in the Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders to be held July 10 – 30 at Appalachian State University. Approximately 24 students from across the state will be selected to participate in the institute. Tuition is $900 and covers housing, meals, transportation and admission fees to sites and events.
