Attention 9th – 12th graders: All students of traditional music are invited to participate in the 17th annual Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival Scholarship Competition. Applications must be completed and returned to the committee postmarked no later than February 15, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for details.

Attention juniors: Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is again sponsoring the Washington Youth Tour for high school juniors in each of the four primary service districts. The trip is scheduled for June 11-17, 2011. You may apply online at www.blueridgeemc.com under “In the Community” tab. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2011 and interviews will be held in late March.

Attention sophomores: Alleghany High School has been chosen by the SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership In Tomorrow’s Endeavors) Program at NC State University to give sophomores the opportunity to attend this educational retreat May 14 – May 18, 2011. Applications are available in guidance or you can fill out the application online at clubs.ncsu.edu/satellite, print it and mail to their office. Cost to attend is $25, plus transportation to and from the program and any extra spending money.

Attention Students 15-18- ASU is offering a summer residential camp experience in Forensic Anthropology at ASU for 1 week. Information can be found at www.appstate.edu/-Robbinsgm/. Only 24 students will be accepted into each week. Camp fee is $600 and students must register by May 1, 2011. After May 1, a $50 processing fee applies. Weeks are July 17 – July 22 and July 24 – July 29. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

Scholarships Available –

The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Scholarship awards one scholarship per region. Annually, 30 scholarships, worth a total of $75,000, will be awarded. The value of each scholarship is $2500 and it is a one-year scholarship. FRS provides $2000 and the sponsoring organization provides a $500 match. Skyline is our sponsoring organization. Applications are available in guidance or online at www.skyline.org . Deadline for submission is February 17, 2011 at Skyline’s corporate office. See Mrs. Miller for more details.

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship program is designed to recognize exceptional high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. Minimum GPA and SAT requirements are: GPA of 3.5 on an unweighted scale and SAT combined total of at least 1875. Applications may be obtained at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/recruitment/scholarships/byrd/. Deadline for application submission to guidance is February 21, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for more details.

The North Carolina Farm Bureau R. Flake Shaw Scholarship Program offers two opportunities. The university/college scholarship is valued at $3000 per year for four years. The community college scholarship is valued at $1000 per year for two years. Applications are available in guidance, at the local Farm Bureau office and online at www.ncfb.org/Programs/rfShaw/rfShaw.cfm. Deadline is March 15, 2011 at the local Farm Bureau office. Applications for the Delta Kappa Gamma Recruitment Grant in the amount of $500.00 are now available in the guidance office. Applicants must be female and either currently enrolled in or planning to enroll in a college or university to pursue a degree in education. The scholarship is sponsored by the Ashe/Alleghany Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational society. Deadline is March 1, 2011.

UNCG Guarantee is a program that not only offers an outstanding financial aid package for those who qualify; it is also a support program that provides a variety of opportunities and services to enhance scholars’ academic achievement, leadership skills, and personal success. The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program will award up to 215 grants, each valued at $12,000 ($3000 per year for up to four years) for the 2011-12 academic year. These scholarships are made possible through a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The scholarship application is available at CFNC.org/goldenleaf. The application deadline is March 1, 2011. The FAFSA must be completed by March 1, 2011 also.

The N.C. Association of Rescue and EMS administrates the Whitlow-Osborne Scholarship for the Carson and Maggie Whitlow and William F. Osborne families and will each year award (1) $2000 scholarship to a High School Senior or Member of an Emergency Services organization in Alleghany County (among others). Recipient must enter into an Emergency Services Curriculum for a course of study at a community college, technical institute, or an accredited trade school in the fall that same year. Awards will be paid to the student in installments of $500 per semester. This scholarship may be awarded for a total of (2) years. Deadline for submission of application is March 31, 2011. The North Carolina Bar Association is continuing its program of awarding scholarships to children of North Carolina law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. The North Carolina Society of Accountants Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1970 to provide scholarships for deserving students who indicate a desire to enter the profession of Accounting. The scholarship awards for 2011-2012 school year will be $500 each. Deadline for submission of application is April 15, 2011. See Mrs. Miller for more information.



The State Employees Association of North Carolina’s (SEANC) scholarship is available online at www.seanc.org and must be returned, completed, to the Scholarship Chairman of the district of which the parent is a member. All applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2011. The applicant and/or parent or guardian must be a member of SEANC. See Mrs. Miller for more information.

Any senior interested in a career as a CAT Diesel Technician is invited to apply to the Caterpillar Dealer Academy at Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, SC. This is a two-year associates degree program. See Mrs. Miller for more information.
